Imlil and the High Atlas
About this experience
The picturesque mountain village of Imlil is an essential stop for all hikers embarking on the ascent of Mount Toubkal, standing at 4,167 meters, the second-highest peak in Africa after Kilimanjaro. Located 64 km from Marrakech, Imlil is also a gateway to the stunning Toubkal National Park.
After crossing the Asni Gorges, a charming village known for its Saturday weekly market, the road continues along a lush green valley where the mountains, impressive natural ramparts, display a play of colors. Mid-slope, you’ll discover Berber villages with earthen houses surrounded by terraced fields. Each of these villages clings to the foothills of the Atlas, built in tiers, offering a succession of varied landscapes and lush vegetation.
A mule ride to the village of Aremd is planned to enjoy the panoramic views of the Imlil Valley and the Toubkal region. The area even served as the backdrop for the American film “Seven Years in Tibet.”
