A stroll through the Souks will allow you to find many little trinkets to bring back from Marrakech, whether for yourself or as gifts. The selection is vast, but some products are particularly popular with travelers. Here’s some inspiration for what to look for:
Spices: If you enjoy cooking, you’ll find a wide range of spices to bring back from Marrakech. Cumin, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and “ras-el-hanout,” a famous spice blend essential for preparing couscous, are just a few options. Be sure to shop around for fair prices, as the area is highly touristy. It may be a good idea to find a local grocery store where residents shop.
Pastries: Continuing the culinary theme, you can also bring back some delicious pastries made with honey, almonds, or orange blossom. Examples include corne de gazelle, ghoriba, chebbakia, makrout, and more. These are so popular with visitors that vendors are accustomed to packing them carefully for the flight home.
Tea Set: After enjoying so much delicious mint tea in Marrakech, you may want to recreate that experience at home. For this, you’ll need a traditional Moroccan teapot and small, colorful glasses with oriental patterns. The traditional way of serving involves holding the teapot high above the glass to allow the tea to aerate and form a frothy layer, which is considered lucky.
Argan Oil: If you’d like to bring back some high-quality argan oil (great for nourishing both skin and hair), opt for organic oil produced by a certified cooperative. This way, you’ll ensure quality while also supporting rural women.
Babouches: These traditional Moroccan shoes, made from goat leather with a calfskin sole, are a centuries-old tradition. You’ll find many different colors and styles in the souks of Marrakech, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
Ceramic Items: Whether it’s a tagine dish, a large plate, or a fruit tray, Marrakech offers beautiful ceramics, often vibrant in color and available in various sizes. These make for wonderful decorative pieces in your home.
Perfume & Musk: There’s nothing like bringing home a scent from the country to remind you of your travels. A small block of musk, which is perfect for perfuming your clothes, is inexpensive and lasts for a long time.
