At the heart of the Medina lies the famous Jemaa el-Fna Square, the perfect starting point for exploring Marrakech’s old town.

More than just a public square, it is the city’s most iconic attraction. Day and night, it’s bursting with life! In fact, Jemaa el-Fna is the most vibrant place in the Medina.

Street performers leap and tumble, tooth pullers resell second-hand teeth (yes, really!), water carriers pose for photos, henna artists decorate hands, snake charmers put on a show, and monkey trainers roam the crowd—all blending into a lively, chaotic spectacle!

A Few Tips for Navigating the Madness

We personally prefer to keep our distance from the monkey handlers. They’ll often place a monkey on your shoulder and then demand a few dirhams in return. Even snapping a quick photo from afar won’t be free—so be discreet! More importantly, we feel saddened by the sight of these little monkeys in captivity, dressed up and trained for entertainment. It’s a business we choose not to support.

On a lighter note, don’t miss the fresh juice stands! The juices are incredibly tasty and super affordable.

As evening approaches, food stalls begin to pop up. Vendors selling soup or snails will enthusiastically wave you over to try their specialties.

You’ll also find grilled fish, kebabs, couscous, and more. However, it’s not the best place to eat—prices are steep, and the food quality can be hit or miss. The vendors can be pushy, sometimes even aggressive, in convincing you to sit at their tables. Stand your ground and don’t let yourself be pressured!

A Completely Different Vibe at Night

When night falls, the square transforms once again.

In addition to the usual daytime performances, new crowds gather around musicians, dancers, storytellers, and even game stands—from soda bottle fishing and mini-golf to VR headsets!

For a truly mesmerizing view, head up to one of the square’s rooftop cafés and watch the bustling scene unfold below. The energy is absolutely surreal!
